What is TOEFL? TOEFL Explanation - AAE Consultant:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by more than 11,000 universities and other institutions in over 190 countries and territories. TOEFL is one of several major English-language tests in the world, primarily taken by students applying to universities in the United States.
A TOEFL score on the iBT version of the test is on a scale of 0 to 120. Scores on the Essentials test are reported in half bands from 1 to 12. Both tests include the best score on each test section in the past 2 years in the official score report. A student may take the TOEFL as many times as he wants, but no more than once every 3 days.
How to Prepare for TOEFL Exam
Listening
The TOEFL iBT listening test is composed of six recordings with questions about each one. The recordings are 3 to 4 academic lectures ranging from 3 to 5 minutes in length with 6 questions about each lecture, and 2 to 3 recorded student or teacher conversations ranging from 2 to 3 minutes in length with 5 questions about each conversation. The TOEFL listening test lasts 41 to 57 minutes.
Speaking
The TOEFL speaking section is the third part of the TOEFL iBT. You will see or hear prompts and then record your answers on the computer. The TOEFL speaking tasks are graded by an examiner somewhere else, not someone at your test center. The speaking test on the iBT lasts 17 minutes and on Essentials it lasts 13 minutes. It is the shortest section of the TOEFL.
Reading
The TOEFL iBT reading section is composed of 3 or 4 texts of approximately 700 words each, with 10 questions to answer about each text. That makes a total of 30 or 40 questions in the TOEFL reading section. Depending on the number of texts and questions, students have 54 to 72 minutes to complete the TOEFL reading section.
Writing
The TOEFL writing section is the last part of the TOEFL iBT test. On the TOEFL iBT, it lasts 50 minutes and is made up of two writing prompts. You will be given a pre-determined amount of time for each writing task: 20 minutes for the first task and 30 minutes for the second.
