In many countries, overseas university students apply for admission during their last year of high school or their last year of degree in college or university. University admission or college admission is the process through which students enter tertiary education at universities and colleges. Systems vary widely from country to country, and sometimes from institution to institution.

It’s a good idea to start the college or university application process several months before application deadlines, especially if you have other obligations like study or work. Many high school students start their applications in the summer before their senior year, or in the last semester of the university degree.

University application requirements:

First, let’s take a look at some general requirements, what you typically need to apply to colleges and universities as an international student.

Academic transcripts: Your transcripts from high school or university to show universities what classes you’ve taken and the grades you got in them.

Letters of recommendation: Many colleges require two or three letters of recommendation from trusted adults in your life. These typically come from recent teachers, but can also come from team coaches, advisers of organizations you’re a part of outside of institution, or employers.

You will need to take some test, these include SAT, GRE. ATAS, IELTS and ACT test scores. Though many schools have stopped requiring standardized test scores, many still do. If you’re considering applying to any that do, you’ll want to make sure you sign up for and prepare for the test.

University and colleges require Statement of Purpose (SOP) to take your application into consideration who you are beyond your grades and test scores. The SOP and other essays will give you the opportunity to show a more rounded picture of who you are.

Application: You’ll generally have to fill out an application form for each university that covers information like a list of extracurricular activities and parent or legal guardian information.
